Discover Relaunch

Thousands Flock to Discover Children’s Story Centre - Stratford

Discover Children’s Story Centre, saw queques along Stratford’s High Street on Saturday 10 April as 2,000 children, adults and carers came along to its free Spring Party. The party in partnership with Newham Council celebrated the relaunch of Discover after a month of being closed to the public to allow a magical transformation to take place. The entrance which was previously hidden on Bridge Terrace has now moved to Stratford’s High Street, a new café has been installed and brilliant play spaces including a magic tower and fairy forest have been created for families and schools to enjoy.

The celebrations began as Discover’s patron Meera Syal and Mick Inkpen’s creation – Kipper the dog cut the ribbon and opened the new front door to the public. Families lined the High Street to play and imagine in the newly refurbished venue and take part in stories with Kipper, music sessions, face painting, arts and crafts and a tea party for under 3s.

Discover’s redevelopment will be one of the first improvements funded by London Thames Gateway Development Corporation’s £10m plans to invigorate a 1 mile stretch of Stratford’s High Street.

Sally Goldsworthy, Discover Director said: ‘It was an amazing day which really saw the High Street teeming with families. It was a great atmosphere with many visitors coming to us for the first time.’

Newham Parent, ‘Excellent play/learning/fun development for young children to explore learn and have fun! This is a much needed facility for Newham.’

Peter Andrews, Chief Executive of the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation said: ‘We are delighted that with our funding Discover have been able to move their front door on to the High Street, revealing for the first time the magical story world inside.  Our aim is to breathe new life into the High Street making it a place which residents and visitors alike will want to use and wander along as well as being a great international advertisement for east London and the London 2012 Games.’
